You can read my Badlands 2800 pocket-specific list by clicking here. In the past, it was takingme nearly my entire backpack hunt to get things organized exactly the way I wanted themand to get the center of gravity of my pack right. So I decided to write itdown as I was packing up to go home. I eventuallystarted keeping notes of what went in which pocket. Worst case scenario is that I might be chilly for a few nightsuntil I get back to BaseCamp, but I am fairly certain that I will be fine. I will bring my current bag toBaseCamp as a back up, in case the weather is much cooler this year. Itypically sleep in my underwear and shirt. SinceI am carrying rain gear regardless of weather, I can wear that iftemperaturesdrop to the low end of the spectrum. Iam also planning to carry a sleeping bagthat weighs 8 ounces less. (That blade is fordoing autopsies, and I would rather not do one on myself). I believe this blade will bemuch safer than the stock #60XT blade sold with the knives. For those familiar with the Piranta, I did elect to purchase some #22XTblades. I amswitching to a Havalon Piranta razor knife with 5 spare blades rather thancarry two knives and an ultralight sharpener. I plan to replacea few items with newer/better/lighter equipment. The weight reduction of theseitems alone amounts to a little over 3 ½ pounds. I am alsoremoving some of my spare batteries as I return to BaseCamp every four or fivedays, there is ample opportunity to recharge. If you are new to an area, or I was lessfamiliar, I would stick to my tried and true Katadyn filter despite it'sfourteen ounce weight. The streams run very clearwhere I go backpack hunting. This year I have decided to removesome items such as waterproof socks, elk decoy, spare release, second butanelighter, and my Katadyn H2O water filter.I plan to use iodine tablets and neutralizers for waterpurification. I know we all spend a fairamount of money to go on these hunts, and we are very passionate about it.Having the right gear for this endeavor is paramount. It is easy to see if an item has outlived it'spurposefulness, or it's simply time to upgrade. I am findingthat since I started counting ounces, it has made me “hyper-aware” (my wife'sword) of my backpack hunting gear weight. ![]() If I'm not warm enough to sleepthrough the night, I'm probably not hunting elk where I have been backpack hunting forthe past 20 years. During archeryseason, I have never had to wear rain pants over regular pants, over longjohns. However, since I'm alreadywearing pants, and carrying rain gear, I'll sleep in my hunting pants or rainpants if necessary. If that isthe case, then you are carrying too much.Īs an example, when it gets cooler, I would sometimes like to sleep inlong johns. Proper layering is essentialfor maximizing comfort and warmth. However, if you are not careful, you might be carrying more thanyou actually intend to wear. If the item was not used last year, was itessential? I didn't use my rain pantslast year, however they are essential, and have an ever permanent place in mypack. As I beginpreparations for my next hunt, I am referring back to my list, re-evaluating every item I plan to carry. ![]()
